It was only after some several months had passed that I felt an intense pain and I decided to have it examined. By this time, I had already started high school. The first visit to the doctor did not reveal much. I had to take some medical tests and the biopsy revealed that I had cancer. I could not believe it at first, for I could not understand how I could get cancer at my age. This denial made me reluctant in starting treatment, as I sought the second and third opinion concerning the diagnosis. All the doctors at different health centers confirmed the diagnosis. I finally yielded to the pressure from my family and healthcare providers and I began the cancer treatments last year. I had to go to the hospital many times, and the treatments I received made me tired and weak. My situation was worse because of my weak immune system. I missed school for many days. The pain I felt was immeasurable and I could not compare it to anything I have ever experienced. It was during this time that I realized the value and benefits of having genuine friends. They would visit me often at home, and they would make the time to study with me during the weekends. I was determined to finish high school and graduate at the same time with them, and I put a lot of dedication in my studies at home. I did not attend classes, and I missed the opportunity of learning, as the others were learning. Although I took the time to study on my own, I knew that I could not compare this with the classroom experience. I did not have the time to go to the library or to use the learning resources that were available to the other students. All these struggles and challenges affected my experience through school. Since I began the treatments, I have noticed great improvements in my health. The first few months in my final year were tough, as I had to catch up with my classmates. My dedication finally paid off. I am in the top high school in Baltimore, and securing a good grade is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that I put because there is much competition. My experience with cancer and the struggles I faced made me realize that a person can accomplish anything if he or she determines to work with diligence and dedication. It made me resolve to work harder to fulfill my life’s dreams. This has led me to apply to this institution, because I know that it represents a beginning for me to accomplish the objectives I have set. In The Hobbit the danger and the excitement reach a peak when the forces of good seem about to be overcome by the forces of evil. In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien builds to two simultaneous peaks. One occurs at the point when Sauron's forces sweep down on the small army led by Aragorn at the gates of Mordor. When Tolkien departs from this chronological sequence in The Hobbit, he carefully guides you through the jump in time: "Now if you wish, like the dwarves, to hear news of Smaug, you must go back again to the evening when he smashed the door and flew off in a rage, two days before." The story line of The Lord of the Rings, on the other hand, is much more complicated. The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy, consisting of three volumes (Parts One to Three) divided into six sections (Books I through VI). The novel jumps back and forth in time, following the stories of several characters. The various story lines finally converge near the end when all the characters are reunited as Aragorn is crowned king of Gondor. Tolkien uses these shifts in viewpoint to good effect, often ending his scenes as cliff- hangers, slowly building the tension to its climax.
